From a Few Notes in a Text File to a Website - Three-ish Years Later
Published on September 20, 2025
Scribo started as a list of disjointed fragments of thoughts about making a social media platform that I didn't hate. This list of five or so concepts was jotted down in a text file, which was opened a couple of times a year. Sometimes I might add a new idea, but most of the time I'd look at it and think, 'wow, that's going to be too much work'.
If there is one thing you should know about me, it’s that I need projects. I thrive whenever I’m building or creating something, and I tend to crash and burn when I’m not. So, one day while trying to force my brain to come up with an idea for a new project, I remembered the notes I’d made regarding a different kind of social media. I started thinking about it again, and about the need for a much more positive environment online. Sure, most people don’t like to read anymore. Most people are content being addicted to scrolling endless feeds of short videos. And some just want to pick fights in comment sections with people they disagree with. It’s no wonder the term ‘brain rot’ has become common vernacular.
So out of my need to create, and my disdain for everything that social media has become, Scribo, Latin for ‘I write’, was born.
